Questions to Consider

How differentiated is my classroom?

How often are you reaching the needs of ALL learners in your classroom?  Daily? Weekly?  Monthly?  Be honest with yourself.  Flipping your learning environment allows students to learn the best way that suits them.  It also allows the teacher to gain precious face-to-face time with students.

How do I empower students in my classroom?

Students live in a world where they can tailor many aspects of their life to suit their personality or needs.  They do not live in a one-size-fits-all world.  When students feel like they have some kind of empowerment, they become more engaged.  This concept holds true with learning.  In what ways do you give students control over their own learning?  How often does this occur?  Are they simply trying to meet YOUR needs and instructions?

Are my students being prepared for real-world environments outside my classroom?

Due to the affordances of a flipped learning environment, students perceive to be better prepared for work and other real-world environments.  Ask yourself these questions regarding preparedness:

  • How often are students conducting critical thinking INSIDE my classroom while I am present?

  • What kinds of activities do I provide students to allow judgment of information or make decisions based on information?  How often does this occur?

  • Are my students learning digital literacy skills?  How often?

How engaged are my students?

Engagement happens when students are operating at the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.  When they are actively thinking about the content in a critical manner, they perceive themselves to be more engaged with the content.   Frequency also plays a major role.  In a flipped environment, students can operate at higher levels of thinking daily.

Are there opportunities for Problem/Project Based Learning in my classroom?

Problem/Project Based Learning thrives in a flipped learning environment.  This type of learning is also highly engaging for students.

How accessible is my class outside of the allotted class time?

In order for students to learn efficiently and have a sense of empowerment, they need to be able to access your class outside of the allotted class time.  This includes access to classroom related materials, front-loading content, and even resources for self-assessment.
